Cora walked down the street with her hands in her pockets and a scowl on her face. She was trying to calm herself down a bit and seemed to be doing a terrible job of it—she was angrier now than she was when she jumped out of the car, leaving Nolan behind. She knew it wasn’t entirely his fault. Bureau politics play a big part in, well, everything. There was no escaping it.

But what angered her most was the fact that she was a solid and talented investigator. She was smart and intuitive. And though she didn’t rely on her hunches or gut feelings, those often led to something bigger. Something solid. Everything inside of Cora was telling her there was a connection between the abduction and the Postcard Killer. Yet, the SAC back in her field office couldn’t see what she saw. Couldn’t feel what she felt. He wasn’t making the connections she was and wouldn’t go out on that limb with her.

Although it was upsetting, it didn’t surprise Cora very much. Special Agent in Charge Martin Green was intelligent and a very capable administrator. He knew how to navigate the political landscape of the Bureau a lot better than Cora ever would. She thought Green was a good man. And he was good at what he did. The Los Angeles field office was a tightly-run ship and had become one of the brightest jewels in the Bureau’s crown under Green’s stewardship. He knew how to get the best out of the agents under his command.

But there was a world of difference between being a gifted administrator and being an effective field agent. Cora knew enough about Green to know that he wasn’t cut out for field work. He didn’t have the investigative chops or the intuitiveness and ability to look outside the box to see the bigger picture that was necessary to working in the field and being an effective agent. Green didn’t have what it took to take the pile of pieces and put them together in the way that allowed them to see the bigger picture and close out a case.

Green was a political animal. Not a field agent. And Cora assumed that the optics of two of his agents getting pulled into an abduction case where a child might end up dead worried him. It wouldn’t be a good look for his leadership or the field office as a whole. She believed that was why he’d made sure to tell Nolan it was a local matter and that they were to only be involved tangentially, acting more as consultants than active participants in the investigation.

Cora hated that the Bureau even considered things like optics when there was a child’s life on the line. She found it revolting. But that was the world they lived in.

“You can’t be here.”

The woman’s voice pulled Cora out of her thoughts, and she snapped her head up to see Grace Cole standing on the sidewalk in front of her. The woman was dressed in black jeans and a black parka that was far too big for her.
